Floating Sensor Network Demonstration

The drifters are also designed with a capacity to dive below the surface--a feature to be implemented in the upcoming fleet expansion. This provides the drifters with the ability to to acquire sensor measurements with vertical resolution. Here, a prototype of the bouyancy system is demonstrated in the lab.

Drifter Test - Hearst Memorial Pool.mov

An early demonstration of control algorithms implemented on the drifter platform included autonomous waypoint tracking in the Hearst Memorial Pool at UC Berkeley.

Drifter Test - Aquatic Park

The drifters have undergone multiple field tests, including demonstrations in which drifter-generated flow velocity measurements were integrated into the REALM and DSM2 hydrodynamic models in real-time. The existing fleet can be also used for demonstration of control or sensing algorithms.
